Introduction to Ski Touring

Come and discover one of the finest ways of travelling in the winter mountains. If you have never been ski mountaineering (or ski touring) before, don’t worry, you will be introduced to the bindings, equipment and techniques that make it all possible to escape the pistes.
If you already have some experience of ski mountaineering and want to take things a bit further, then we can easily design a programme that builds on what you know already.
At the introductory level, we would aim to get you acquainted with touring skis, bindings, boots and skins and also methods for efficiently changing (‘transitioning’) between walking and skiing modes. We would also hope to do this as part of a reasonably straightforward mountain journey.
For the more experienced, we can look in more detail at techniques for navigation on skis and managing steeper terrain and/or more challenging snow (both up and down). This could involve some ice axe and crampon skills. We may also be able to further develop avalanche hazard evaluation and transceiver search skills (these topics are handled in more detail on separate one day courses: Winter Skills and Avalanche and Transceiver ).

Had a fantastic day ski touring up Cairn Gorm with Malcolm. Learnt a lot of useful skills we’ll be sure to use again, but also had a lot of fun. Can’t wait to go again!

    Thanks Malcolm!
