Overview

requires If you love to walk in remote places, join me for a guided hike up Ben Macdui, Britan’s second-highest summit. At 1309m (4295ft) Ben Macdui is a ‘munro’, located high up on the Cairngorms plateau in Scotland. This makes it a significant challenge at any time of year.

Despite stupendous views across the arctic-like Cairngorms plateau, the weather and visibility can change with little warning. Adding to the challenge, there is little shelter, few landmarks and no short or easy walking routes off Ben Macdui. For these reasons, a guided hike up Ben Macdui is a sensible choice.

  • See rare and protected arctic wildlife
  • Learn mapreading skills
  • Backup in case of mist and fog
  • Spectacular views from Britains second highest munro (hopefully!)
  • Winter hike requires a weather window and winter skills training (see my Intro to Winter Mountain Skills course).

When hiking on the Cairngorm plateau and Ben Macdui, the landscape appears barren. However, views of rare arctic wildlife and spectacular mountain scenery are often possible. We will carefully check the weather and our own gear before setting off. Be ready for mostly gentle walking terrain, but with some steeper slopes, boulders, bogs and maybe snowpatches!

I Had an awesome day summiting Ben Macdui in winter with Malc! Malc is a first class professional Mountain Guide and coach with outstanding service!. He has extensive knowledge of the mountains and a wide range of Mountain skills including navigating multiple routes with map and compass, Weather, safety etc. Arc Guiding provided me with a tailor made service that suited my level of experience and ability. We started the day out with a meeting, looking at the various routes and weather on the mountain then headed to Ben Macdui. I also had the opportunity to learn many things about the mountains and also learn various winter skills that took my confidence and ability to the next level. A perfect day out!! Whether this is your first venture into the mountains or you are already experienced I Highly recommend Arc Guiding!

Malc is a brilliant guide, taking me up to Ben Macdui via interesting routes spotting wild flora on route, getting close to reindeer. I learnt so much and felt very well looked after. Will book again for sure.
