What to wear for bird watching

A baselayer top or trekking shirt is good to wear for birding and wildlife watching. Have enough warm fleece or wool mid layers to keep you warm if sitting still for a while. Whether you go for hiking boots or wellies depends on the amount and type of walking you plan to do. Avoid jeans for wildlife watching as they can be uncomfortable to walk in, especially in wet weather. Go for trekking trousers instead (they also provide some protection against ticks). A waterproof shell jacket and trousers are important in cold, wet, windy weather. Ideally, this should be in muted ‘earthy’ colours – especially if watching wildlife at close range. Bring a hat appropriate for the weather and situation. For example, many birders like a baseball hat or Tilley hat for UV protection, but a woolly hat might be better in cold conditions. Gloves are also useful in cold, wet or windy weather.

What colours should I wear for bird watching?

Clothing colour can make a difference when bird watching. Greens, browns and greys are good as they blend in with the environment. Camouflage patterns are best suited to photographers.
